We then read "The Open Window" together and began answering questions on the worksheet. Finish questions 2-5 for Monday. The text of the story and the questions are here.
Monday, Sept 12: Today we reread the story "The Open Window" and watched the short film together. On the handout that I gave in class, there is an opinion question. Follow the directions at the end of the handout to complete the paragraph. This must be typed and handed in on Wednesday! Instructions can be found here.
Wednesday, Sept 14: Today we worked through the packet on short story elements. Students will hand in opinion paragraphs next week Wednesday, as we will be in Quebec.
Wednesday, Sept 21: Today we finished Short Story elements power point. (plus handout). We then graphed a story together in groups using this handout.
Friday, Sept 23: Today we read "The Stolen Party" and answered questions about it in groups. Do what you can and we will discuss the story on Monday. The rest of the class period was used to study for out QUIZ next Wednesday. It will be a matching quiz on short story elements.
Monday, Sept 26: Today we discussed "The Stolen Party" and then began talking about magical realism. Here is the reading that we will be discussing together next class (I gave it to students today, but we did not get to it.)

Monday, Oct 3 Today we took up the questions for the reading above. We then played a kahoot on magical realism and then began reading the story "The Man with Enormous Wings". We will finish reading this story tomorrow.
Wednesday, October 5 Today we read the story "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and split into groups for comprehension questions.
Friday, October 7 Today we debriefed the play from yesterday and visited Mr. Graham's drama class for presentations. No homework!
Wednesday, October 12 Today we finished up the questions for "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and learned about figurative language. If you were absent, be sure to pick up this sheet on Friday. We then read the short story "Light" together. You will not be tested on this story, but we will analyze the figurative language in this story next class. You will be tested on figurative language.
Friday, October 14 Today we began watching Stranger than Fiction as a class. There are two handouts for this film discussing magical realism. Students must complete a character analysis for all the main characters listed on the first handout and have completed the chart as far as we have gone in the movie. The character analyses will be checked for completion on Monday!
Monday, October 17 Today we continued with the movie Stranger than Fiction.
Wednesday, October 19 Today we finished the movie Stranger than Fiction and discussed using the handout from before. We will be having a test next Wednesday, October 26. Here is the review.
Friday, October 22 Today was grandparents day. We wrote short stories with our grandparents and used the extra time to study for our test tomorrow.
Monday, October 24 Today we wrote a character analysis from Stranger than Fiction. You will submit that to the Google classroom by 11:59pm tonight. You should have received an email about being invited, so be sure to submit it there as opposed to sharing it to my email. We have a test on Wednesday. The "success criteria" review is above, so use that to study!
Wednesday, October 26 Today we took a test! For those of you who need to finish on Monday, come and find me in the staff workroom at lunch.
Monday, October 31 Today we began our new unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. We are going through stations together and finding out information about the setting and characters of the book. Students are filling out a handout as they go along and must complete this fully for a grade.
Friday, November 4 Today we continued with out stations activity. We will finish this up on Monday. This will be due on Wednesday, so be sure to keep up with it.
Monday, November 7 Today we finished our stations activity and began to discuss them together. We will finish this discussion next class and will hand in our packets for a completion grade. Students also received their tests back.
Wednesday, November 9 Today we discussed the stations activities. We then discussed allusions with a PPT and almost finished chapter 1 together.
Monday, November 21 Thank you for your patience with the website! By now, students have read up until Chapter 11. We have a quiz on Wednesday on the content of these chapters. We read an article together on the Southern Gothic genre today and answered questions about it.
Wednesday, November 23 Today we took a quiz and then went over examples of gothic elements in the text. We filled out this chart and worked in partner groups to find quotations and cite them correctly. Read chapters 12 and 13 and answer the questions for homework.
Monday, November 28 Today we finished our gothic elements conversation. Students received two handouts about characters: foil and mirror characters and Character division sheet
For homework you must write two sentences of analysis for the paragraph we wrote in class together. Additionally, you must have read and answered all the questions up until the end of chapter 13. I will check for all these answers on Wednesday as a checkpoint day.
Friday, December 2 Today students received chapter questions for the rest of the novel. You must read chapters 16-18 for Monday. There are only questions for chapter 16. Students received a chart with symbols and were each assigned one specific symbol, either working in partners or alone. On Monday we will present these to each other using chart paper.

Wednesday, December 14 Crashcourse video on race, gender, and class. We read the last chapter of the book and discussed the quote from Carlos Eire. The handout for the "Gray Area". You have a work period tomorrow for your essay. Use the time wisely! If you have not already submitted your thesis to me, you MUST do this by Friday's class at the latest!
Friday, December 16 Today students worked on their essays! Rough draft due next week. Email me thesis if you have not already!

Wednesday, January 11 We are between units, so I recommend working on your homework from other classes and picking up a book and reading!! Your responses to Monday's writing prompt will now be due on Friday. Now they will be beautifully polished, right? :) Happy snow day!
Friday, January 13 Today we improvised skits and filled in an opinnionaire about some of themes for our Shakespeare unit. We played an improv game with time remaining after discussion of our answers.
Wednesday, February 1 Today we read about Shakespearean plays. We went through this PPT and filled out this handout. We also did an activity about iambic pentameter and practiced memorizing a few Shakespeare lines. On Friday we will read!
Friday, February 3 Today we began reading Much Ado About Nothing. So fun! There is no homework; however, we will be watching the movie piece by piece as we read, so if you miss anything, be sure to catch up with the film version here.
Monday, February 6 Today we had some silent reading time to commence Literacy Week! We then watched a part of the play and read until the end of Act 1. For homework, you must work on the "First Impressions" chart by choosing FOUR (4) of the characters and filling in the top and bottom parts of the column.
Wednesday, February 8 Today we took up the first impressions character chart. We then read through the first part of Act 2 together. For homework, you must submit your responses to the questions given to you today on Friday. You may write these responses or type them. They must be handed in at the beginning of class. If you are an ELL student, you do NOT need to answer these questions, but rather work on the Literacy Test Prep packet that I gave to you.
Friday, February 10 Today we completed Act 2, scene 1 together. If you were absent, be sure to catch up as many plans unfold--it is a long scene. We will watch it on Monday. For those who were gone or did not hand it in, you must complete the Act 1 response handout given to you last class. Monday is the last day I will accept it.
Monday, February 13 Today we watched the movie clip up until the point we had read together. We then listened to an audio recording up until the end of the song on page 26. We discussed the song a bit and sang together :) For Wednesday, I want you to consider this question: Why did the director of the film choose to have Beatrice sing this song at the beginning of the movie? Come up with at least three reasons as to why.
Wednesday, February 15 Today we took up the discussion question from last class and then listened to "Sigh No More" by Mumford and Sons. Then we read this article about the danger of the expression "Boys will be boys". We then finished Act 2 together and watched part of the movie. For project day, you must do the following:
Type up a 5-8 sentence summary response of Act 2. Then choose 5 quotes from Act 2 that are the most important in terms of moving the plot along, according to you. You must cite these correctly. After each quotation, you must write a 1-2 sentence explanation telling why you chose this quotation.
Wednesday, February 22 Today we continued reading Act 3. There is no homework for Friday; however do consider this blog entry that we read about slut shaming.
Friday, February 24 Today we continued with the play and watched part of the movie. For Monday, you must hand in the Act 3 questions given to you today.

Wednesday, February 29 Today we continued reading the play. We will have an Act 3 quiz next class.
Friday, March 3 Today Ms. Harris was gone. Students took an Act 3 quiz. Then they did practice activities for the Literacy Test (on March 30). These sheets are available if you were gone. If you have questions and/or are looking for practice questions, go to Mrs. Wiebenga's website for all information. At the end of the class, students received an Act 4 quotation worksheet. Choose five quotes from the page and analyze them. This will be due next Wednesday.

If there are still Act 1-4 assignments that you need to hand in, Thursday will be the last day to get those in to me. Friday, April 21 Today we had our last presentation and then students read through the poem "Tuesday 9AM" by Denver Butson. On Monday, you must artistically represent this poem in some way. Information is on the sheet that was given to you in class!
Monday, April 24 Today students got into groups and discussed their "Tuesday 9AM" responses. If you did NOT hand it in, the last day I will accept this is on Wednesday. Then we did black out poetry together. Students must complete their black out poem for Wednesday. We then read a poem together at the end of class titled "Did I Miss Anything?" by Tom Wayman. We discussed it together.
Wednesday, April 26 Today we began class by presenting our "Black Out" poems. We then watched a spoken word poem titled "To This Day" by Shane Koyzcan. Then the students were given the poetic devices assignment. For the rest of the class they worked on these with their groups. For homework, you must describe one small activity that you do each day in detail. (5-10 sentences) Then I want you to write one thematic statement based on what you notice about yourself).
